Lady of the Lake Trail
About the Lady of the Lake Trail
Walter Scott's "Lady of the Lake" was first published in May 1810. The power of the written word is as strong now as it was inspiring 200 years ago. Our route follows in the notional steps of "The Chase", linking the powerbase of Stirling Castle to its historic hinterland, the wild, rugged landscape of Loch Katrine and the Trossachs, where hid the fair Ellen. The landscapes may have changed a little since 1810; but their power remains to inspire the mind, soul and heart. Join us and see for yourself.
The route leads out from the castle ramparts through the surrounding countryside to Doune, then up and over the slopes of Uamh Bheag gazing down to fair Glen Artney. Then the "The Chase" begins in earnest, down through Callander and the stepping stones of lochs, leading to the rugged landscapes of the Trossachs (Na Trosaichean) and Loch Katrine itself. We finish with a sail on Loch Katrine. What better way to end a mythical.
