Shetland Isles

Grade: grade 1 (Grade explanation)

About the Shetland Isles

It's wild, it's wonderful and it's fascinating. We can't visit all 100 or more islands which make up the Shetlands but we should manage more than one! Here's a terrific mixture of dramatic scenery but with plenty of quiet corners, thousands of sea birds but the time to watch just one, seals, otters and whales and every chance of seeing them.

With a character firmly rooted in its Viking past and many remains of those earlier times, this area is a must.

Brief Itinerary for the Shetland Isles:

Day 1: Meet in Stirling and travel to Aberdeen for our overnight ferry crossing to Lerwick departing 17:00.

Day 2: Arrive in Lerwick at about 07:00, disembark the ferry and head somewhere for breakfast. After taking our bags to the hostel, we will enjoy our first walk.

Days 2-6: Possible walks are too many to mention but we aim to get a good feel for Mainland Shetland and also pop over to one of the other islands (Bressay, Papa Stour, Whalsay or Yell). Areas like Sandwick, North Nesting, Sumburgh, Hillswick, Muckle Roe, Dale of Walls, St Ninian’s Isle, all provide great walking. If the wind is up we’ll be looking for sheltered locations. Where at all possible we’ll visit various other places of interest like Jarlshof, Mousa Broch, Old Scatness and also have time to explore Lerwick itself.

Day 6: After our walk for the day, catch the overnight ferry back to Aberdeen

Day 7: Arrive Aberdeen at about 07:00 and travel back to Stirling with a stop for breakfast. Arrival in Stirling should be by about 12.00.
