Highland Coast to Coast Trek

Grade: Grade 3 - Grade 4 (Grade explanation)

About Highland Coast to Coast Trek

Terrific route following ancient ways through the glens and over passes, linking the Dornoch Firth with Loch Broom. Backpacking and camping lets us get deep into the wilderness and recreate the experiences of traders and drovers of old.

Journeying through wild or remote landscapes is not the sole preserve of a hardy mountaineer. It is well within the scope of many walkers who have a streak of adventurous curiosity and a willingness to have a go. The journey will be more physically demanding than a day walk but the rewards can be life changing.

NB: Due to the remote nature of the trip and lack of easy escape routes, participants should ensure that they have a high enough level of fitness to enable them to complete at least the linear parts of this holiday in full. Although the distances are not long and we have all day to enjoy the route folk do have to have the ability to carry 30lbs or so on a daily basis, not impossible but some practice is advised. The terrain covered is mainly on paths and tracks, which may be rough, rocky and wet at times plus there is some un-pathed terrain.

Brief Itinerary for the Highland Coast to Coast Trek:

Day 1: Equipment distribution / check at C-N-Do office. After sorting out gear from the store and a brief scene setting for this special journey, we travel up via Inverness and Alness to near Kincardine on the Dornoch Firth. The first section of our trek will be a short one so that we can get into our stride. Most likely we'll start looking for a place to camp towards the upper end of Coire Bhenneit. (~7.5km)

Day 2: Today’s destination is in the Lochan a'Chairn area which we reach via Strath Rusdale. (~16km)

Day 3: Onward by Diebidale, Glen Calvie and Alladale into Gleann Mor where we’ll camp part way up. (~16km)

Day 4: Continuing on up Gleann Mor and right up Gleann Beag our next stopping point could be in a high coire up near the headwaters of the Abhainn a'Ghlinne Bhig. (~16km)

Day 5: Break camp for the last time to get started early. The most memorable part of the trek takes us up over the high pass and down to Glensquaib and reaching Inverlael by 12.00. (~9km). There our transport south should be waiting returning us to Stirling.
